When I got the call this morning and heard the sad news that Gregor De Gruyther had passed away I was shocked, numb, empty and sad. But I am not writing this to vent my feelings or self indulge. No I am writing because it would feel wrong not to say a few words about the G unit while the sad news sinks in.
I can't claim to be one of his closest friends, but I am lucky enough to have shaken drinks with him at events, consumed tequila and jager with him in various bars across London, talked shit with him into the small hours of the morning, downed vodka with him in Poland and had drinks that he has slung together for me. Even knowing him a little was a great experience as he was the sort of person who made every event he was involved in that little bit livelier.
My thoughts go out to those who were closest to him, his family up in Scotland, his other 'family' down in London. He was a larger than life character who will be missed by all who knew him. Just seeing the reaction of all who know him on facebook strikes a real note. You can see from the comments that he was loved, respected and admired by all who's lives he touched.
I think that anyone who knew him even a little has a story to tell about him, many involving him sticking both feet in his mouth, and then with a gleam in his eye and a razor sharp wit, digging himself out with a quick retort. I have a feeling that on Sunday when those who can make it, gather in LAB to raise a jager or two in his memory, that between the tears and the sadness there will also be a lot of smiles and laughter as we remember a cherished friend who lived his life so well.
I am sure he wouldn't want me bleating on about him, so I will sign off now and raise a glass in his memory.
Cheers G for the good times and great memories, you will be missed

Gregor's last testament

I, like you, only had a fleeting friendship with Gregor. His last few months at the Bayz in Sydney were fantastic, filled with smiles, quick comments and quicker drinks. He was one of life's glorious finds.
I've published a copy of the list he developed and launched a couple of weeks back on my blog, you can read it by following the link above.
